The
Algarve
When you first arrive in the Algarve, your senses come alive as
you experience the rural landscape. The striking appearance of red
poppies in spring; the fresh tangy scents of citrus fruits mixing
with the heady bouquet of wild herbs; the invigorating warm breezes
at the sea's edge. Here is a vivid palette of deep blue skies, green
fields and the earthy colours of the fertile soil which is the source
of the fruits and vegetables that make eating such a delight throughout
the region.
Few
can resist the sweet almond desserts, locally produced cheeses,
spicy chicken piri - piri, freshly baked bread and the wonderful
seafood. Whatever your taste, you'll find regional cuisine and excellent
restaurants wherever you go. You can enjoy the pleasure of dining,
from simple beach bar grills to classic French cuisine. Alternatively,
you can savour pleasant evenings over a relaxed dinner on the terrace,
watching the sun go down on another perfect Algarve day.
There is much to explore here, from the rolling hills and the dramatic
rocky coves in the west to the flatter plains and sand dunes in
the east. In between are the red sandstone cliffs along the central
area, whilst inland, country villages are tucked away where life
continues at a gentle pace. Preserving the traditions of the region,
the older people still practice their crafts and folk music.
The mountains
of Monchique and the National Parks of the Costa Vincentina and
the Ria Formosa, full of protected birds and unique flora and fauna,
are renowned areas of natural beauty. The classic towns of Silves
and Tavira that stand as monuments to the regions Moorish heritage
are also a must to visit.
During the past ten years facilities and infrastructure have been
greatly improved and the Algarve has grown in reputation and developed
into one of Europe's leading destinations for quality tourism.
